Indoor Vs. Outdoor Ranges

I remember the first time I pulled a trigger in an indoor range. I was 21 years old and had saved up for months to buy myself my 21st birthday present. It was a Berretta 92F 9mm handgun. I grew up in the age of the "Lethal Weapon" movies with Riggs and Murtaugh. I got that pistol on my birthday and drove to the range. I had zero experience with a real handgun but had grown up on pellet pistols so I at least had a healthy awareness of muzzle discipline. I pushed in my foam ear plugs, racked my Berretta, and pulled the trigger. "Lord have mercy was that loud!" One of the things that I didn't understand then, but I fully know now, is that if the first experience of shooting is a painful/negative one, the shooter will most likely not continue down the pathway of knowledge seeking. Luckily for me, I was genetically predisposed towards this sort of thing. It's the only way I can describe it considering that my family are a bunch of passive-minded liberals. I'm just drawn to all things pertaining to self defense and the preservation of life. It does bear noting that I didn't go shooting that often because indoor ranges had given me some seriously negative feedback in the way of "audio artillery." It wasn't until I became a cop and had access to outdoor ranges that I really learned how relaxing shooting can be. Shooting has a cathartic effect to it that is unparalleled in any sport. It doesn't matter if you run, bike, swim, Golf, or climb - shooting releases pent up stress more efficiently than anything I've ever tried. The key to it is finding your happy place and being relaxed while running your drills. Nothing is better for this than an open air range. No roof, no walls, no fussy range Nazi pacing behind you. It's just you and the smell of gunpowder, there's nothing finer.
