There are many opinions on “open carry” Many opinions are very conclusive and are dead set in their thoughts about it. Three are even some people that refer to name calling when it comes to describing a person who open carries.
My opinion is just that, my opinion. I don’t revert to name calling or am I heavily set on certain thoughts of open carry. I speak my mind as I hope to learn more about this subject. I hope what I say in this video brings some food for thought. Enjoy.

Augie M. made an obvious point that I hadn’t really considered until now. Police officers open carry all the time! This got me thinking: the concerns that a private citizen faces of someone else grabbing his own firearm would at the very least be the same as the police officer’s concern. Perhaps slightly greater. The main difference would be the uniform and training of the open carrying individual from the supposed perpetrator’s perspective. 2 really important differences for sure; therefore, the level of training and awareness an open carrying police officer has, should also be the same (if not a greater) level for the private citizen. I think open carry is great, and it deters a lot of possible evil doers; however, that small chance of someone grabbing it is something we must be vigilant about and train for. This comment isn’t necessarily arguing for concealed or open carry. I just hope it helps us think carefully about open carrying and warns us not to take it lightly.
I can see where open carry may deter a criminal, or may risk the legally armed citizen. Personally I prefer to be thought of as a gray man, not standing out in the crowd nor drawing attention to myself when away from the crowd. Being armed and ready is great, I just don’t think it’s wise to advertise. I do like the Constitutional Carry Open Carry for anyone who prefers it. Who knows maybe one day I might chose to open carry in suburbia. I do however; agree with Augie M. and will open carry while engaging in back country recreational activities.
I don’t have a problem with Open Carry in the Constitutional sense. I’d just advise that those who DO Open Carry to be extra vigilant when they’re out and about. I’m a retired LEO and spent most of my carry Open Carrying on duty in either uniform or identifying apparel, but when off-duty, vacationing, etc. I always went concealed carry. I agree with Rene that many criminals are cowards and do not want to have a confrontation (especially with an armed citizen) but there’s a growing number of hyper-aggressive, increasingly violent criminals and those are the ones I’m more aware of. IMHO Open Carry has it’s place in camping, hunting, fishing, and other back country recreations, but in an urban/ suburban environment, it could be an invitation for trouble. Just my 2 cents.
